Couples & Marriage Counselling Dublin

Couples therapy for conflict, communication problems, trust issues, and emotional distance.

nothing happens in isolation

Marriage & Relationship Counselling

Every marriage and relationship runs in to difficulty at some point. Some periods of time are more difficult for a couple than others.

External factors such as children, financial pressures, infidelity, and family stress can drastically alter the dynamic of a couple.

Even more importantly are the historical experiences of each partner. Previous events shape us all, creating conditions for any future relationships and sexual encounters.

Our Couples Therapists

Each of our therapists have gone above and beyond when it comes to their training. All couples therapists at the clinic have completed at least one masters level training within the field of counselling and psychotherapy, and all hold at least one relevant professional membership as a result.

On top of that, our couples therapists have relevant experience spanning over at least five years.

How Couples Therapy Helps

Working in tandem with a professional couple’s therapist can help to identify and articulate difficulties in a relationship.

Couples counselling is not about introducing a judge or referee. Neither is it to attempt to keep a couple together relentlessly.

Instead, the aim is to acknowledge and work on emotional difficulties experienced in a relationship. Moving couples forward in whatever way they can.

Although the ideal situation is to meet your couples therapist in person, we also offer online couples therapy for people who might find it more difficult to meet in person.

What the Research Says

2012 — Couples therapy helps most distressed couples (Lebow) [1]

In a major review of outcome research on couple distress, the evidence shows couples therapy has a positive impact for ~70% of couples who receive it.

1999 — Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy shows strong outcomes (Johnson et al.) [2]

Across rigorous EFT trials, outcomes were large on average, and around 70% of couples showed clinically meaningful recovery from relationship distress.

2016 — Psychodynamic couple therapy in routine clinical practice (Hewison et al.) [3]

In a large naturalistic UK clinic setting across 877 participants, psychodynamic couple therapy was associated with significant improvements in psychological distress and relationship satisfaction.

2020 — Couples therapy effects across core relationship outcomes (Roddy et al.) [4]

In a meta-analysis, couples therapy showed large improvements in relationship satisfaction, while couples on a waitlist showed little/no improvement over the same time period. The review also found significant gains in key domains including communication and emotional intimacy.

Research Summary

Research suggests that around 70% of couples benefit from couples counselling.

Particularly in relationship satisfaction, with studies also showing gains in communication and emotional intimacy.

Outcomes vary from couple to couple, and depend on the nature of the difficulties and how progress is measured.
